Users of the Apple Watch will be familiar with the idea of making and receiving phone calls and FaceTime calls from the wrist-mounted device, typically piped through from the paired iPhone. While this is handy, not everyone wants to try and deal with a real-time two-way voice call through their Apple Watch.
There's a new Walkie-Talkie app with push-to-talk functionality for quickly communicating with the people you talk to most, and auto workout detection has been included to make it easier to start. For example, if two people are shopping and want to quickly get in contact with each other while separated, the obvious answer is to start a phone call. However, a phone call is live throughout the length of the call, which means all unmuted conversations and sounds that may not be pertinent to the other person on the call will be picked up and transmitted immediately.
On your iPhone look in the Watch app, My Watch then scroll down and look to see if you have the Walkie-Talkie app available for configuration. If its in the config settings it should be available on your watch. There are reports that Walkie-Talkie is only available if you have FaceTime configured and enabled on your iPhone.

In such situations, occasional but immediate contact with others is a better option, and that's where Walkie-Talkie steps in. Similar to its physical radio-based namesake, Walkie-Talkie is a push-to-talk call between two people, where one person presses the button on the Apple Watch to speak, and it is immediately played out from the Apple Watch speaker on the receiving device.
In practice, this means only the broadcasting side of the call will be heard by the receiving side, without the unexpected two-way conversation. As broadcasts are only made when intended, this means a connection between two contacts can last for a period without necessarily involving any communications.
For the shopping example, this makes Walkie-Talkie useful as a quick way to provide information, such as where the broadcasting party is or will be at a specific time, without needing the other person to respond. For parents, this could be a way to recall children home or to a car with a somewhat unavoidable audio message, without overstepping boundaries by overhearing private conversations between friends.

To get started with Walkie-Talkie, both participants need an Apple Watch Series 1 or later model, running watchOS 5.3. They also need to have set up FaceTime on their iPhones running iOS 12.4 or later. The users also need to be located in a country where Walkie-Talkie support is enabled.
- On the Apple Watch, open up the Walkie-Talkie app.
- Select Add Friends.
- Select a contact from the list.

The 'Add Friends' button lets you add contacts to Walkie-Talkie.
This will send an invitation that will need to be accepted for Walkie-Talkie to work, with it appearing as a notification on their Apple Watch. Once they agree, the contact will move from the 'Friends You Invited' section to the 'Friends' list.
- Open the Walkie-Talkie app.
- Make sure the toggle at the top of the app is set to the green On setting.
- Tap a contact
- Once connected, hold down the talk button and speak.
- If the contact is too loud or quiet, turn the Digital Crown to adjust their volume.
- Open Walkie-Talkie on the Apple Watch.
- Change the toggle at the top of the app.
- Alternately, press the Walkie-Talkie button in Control Center.

Bear in mind that Walkie Talkie can be turned off by other attention-related modes, but not all of them. For example. Theatre Mode will automatically make the user unavailable for Walkie-Talkie conversations, while Silent Mode will still allow it to function.
If you enable Do Not Disturb, the Apple Watch will mirror whatever settings are enabled in the iPhone settings, which means it depends on what has been preset by the user.

- Swipe the contact left.
- Press the red X symbol to delete.

- Enter the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Select Walkie-Talkie.
- Select Edit.
- Press the minus button next to the contact, then press Remove.

The Walkie Talkie app in Teams provides instant push-to-talk (PTT) communication for your team and is now available on Android. Walkie Talkie allows users to connect with their team using the same underlying channels they're members of. Only users who connect to Walkie Talkie in a channel become participants and can communicate with each other using push-to-talk, one at a time.
With Walkie Talkie in Teams, firstline workers can now securely communicate with a familiar PTT experience without needing to carry bulky radios, and Walkie Talkie works anywhere with WiFi or cellular internet connectivity.
Getting started
Deploying Walkie Talkie
Currently, Walkie Talkie is not pre-installed. To enable this feature for users in your organization, you need to add Walkie Talkie to the App Setup Policy assigned to users from the Teams Admin Center.

Once enabled, Walkie Talkie will become available on the Android app within 48 hours.
Adding Walkie Talkie to your app list
In the Microsoft Teams admin center, under Teams app > Setup policies, you should have Allow user pinning set to On. Then, under the Pinned Apps section, click +Add Apps.
On the Add pinned apps panel that appears on the right, use the Search textbox to look for Walkie Talkie. When you have it as a search result, click the Add button to the right of the name to add it to your list.

The Walkie Talkie app should now appear on the Pinned Apps list, and be available for use once you click the Save button.

As noted above, the quality of real-time media over an IP network is greatly impacted by the quality of the network connectivity, but especially by the amount of:
- Latency - This is the time it takes to get an IP packet from point A to point B on the network. This network propagation delay is essentially tied to physical distance between the two points and the speed of light, including additional overhead taken by the various routers in between. Latency is measured as Round-trip Time (RTT).
- Packet Loss - This is often defined as a percentage of packets that are lost in a given window of time. Packet loss directly affects audio quality—from small, individual lost packets having almost no impact, to back-to-back burst losses that cause complete audio cut-out.
- Jitter - This is the average change in delay between successive packets.
Expected data usage from Walkie Talkie is around 20KB/s when sending or receiving audio. When idle, expected data usage from Walkie Talkie is negligible.

- If your firstline worker is using mobile data to communicate via Teams, Walkie Talkie will use the same method.
- Walkie Talkie should work well in low bandwidth situations, or situations where your smartphone is connected and working. Walkie Talkie will not work when there is no connectivity at all.
